What do prairie dogs and videos on how to dye celery have to do with each other?
Well, here in Uncle Cecil’s lab, President Lincoln, his lab assistant, is a wee bit jealous.
At least that’s what we think he meant with all the gesturing and chattering. We are getting better at understanding him, but it’s hard with him being a prairie dog and all.
Anywhoo, he brought this video to us about the classic celery dyeing activity.
He chattered on and on – something about only having shared MWNE cartoons lately - our best guess, he wanted to share a video of his with something fun.
So, we gave him the green light to share his "How to Dye Celery" video with you all today.

How to Dye Celery Directions
Ok, so just in case you didn't catch those directions, we'll share them with you all for Linc Dog.
You will need:
- Celery (you can use a carnation instead)
- A glass
- Food coloring (preferably red or blue as they show up better)
To dye celery, you:
- Fill the glass about two-thirds of the way with water.
- Add a few drops of food coloring. (Three seemed to work for the actor in the video - those were definitely not President Lincoln's hands!)
- Mix it around a bit until the dye is evenly distributed.
- Open up the celery and peel off the outer ribs until you reach the inner ribs that still have a few leaves.
- Choose three of them to place in the glass.
- Set the glass in a place where it won't be disturbed and observe what happens over the next day or so.
You will see that the celery begins to take on the color of the food coloring you added. This is because as the celery draws up water, it takes the food coloring along for the ride.
So, essentially the "blood vessels" of the celery are dyed making them easy for you to see. Pretty cool, huh?
