Wonder Science {Homeschool Science Tip from Elemental Science}

Homeschool Science Tip of the Month - This summer, focus on wonder science.

I ran across a quote by E.B. White that I think is perfect for summer science,

"Always be on the lookout for wonder."

This month, I want to encourage you to spend the summer looking for wonder science. What does wonder science mean?

It means finding, observing, watching, and doing things that make you wonder. Things that spark creativity and curiosity. Things that make you want to learn more about the science you see playing out in front of you.

In short, wonder science is about promoting curiosity and creativity through science.

How do you find wonder science? Here are a few ways:

  • Spend a lot of time outside. Hike that trail you have wanted to hike. Go to that park that you just can't seem to make the time to visit during the year. Visit the national and state parks close to you, or get in the car and travel to one of the parks on your bucket list. Whatever you choose, get outside, see the amazing nature around you, and wonder.
  • Get a science kit. You can purchase a kit, like one from Snap Circuits or K'nex, or order one for free from the Civil Air Patrol. Either way, provide your kiddos with kits that will allow them to build, engineer, and wonder.
  • Visit a science museum. Find a museum in your area that lets students do, touch, manipulate, and play with science to help them wonder about something new!
  • Check out library books. The library is packed with books with a scientific bent. You can guide your students to pick books that will make them wonder about things that they cannot necessarily see or do at home.

So this summer, spend time outside, get a science kit, visit a science museum, and check out a few books to present wonder science to your kiddos!
